The 2028 Olympic & Paralympic Games will bring millions of spectators and thousands of athletes to Los Angeles — and that scale means the 2028 Games could generate a massive amount of waste, clogging landfills and littering our communities long after the closing ceremony. 

The good news is, this waste is preventable. The fix is straightforward: swap single-use cups and foodware for ones that can be washed and used again. Scaled across the Games, this change could prevent millions of pieces of waste from ever being created.

The 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games will draw millions of visitors from across the world to Los Angeles. Without action, the event could result in millions of disposable cups, bottles, and other packaging used once and thrown away, left to clog our landfills, litter host communities, pollute our coastline, and break down into the microplastics increasingly found in our air, lands, water, and bodies. As the world comes together in LA, we have an opportunity to unite around a healthier, more sustainable future.

Switching to reusable cups and foodware is the most effective way to cut single-use plastic waste, and that should be the foundation of the Games' plan. I urge you to commit to hosting and supporting a single-use plastic-free Games by:

  • Offering beverages only in reusable cups, which can be cleaned and reused instead of thrown away, across all venues.

  • Using only reusable plates, food containers and cups in the Olympic & Paralympic Village.

  • Ensuring widespread access to water refill stations and encouraging spectators and athletes to bring and use their own reusable bottles.

  • Promoting reuse through on-site education, venue signage, and press engagement.

The 2028 Games can — and should — set a strong example for future mega events. We are excited for this opportunity to show the world that hosting major events without producing massive amounts of waste is possible.
